Paus is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Resende, in the district of Viseu.
Its symbol (♣) resembles a clover, trees, or a spearhead. Thus, the suit is referred to by variants of these terms in various languages, with the Portuguese still deriving from one of the terms of the Spanish playing card deck.
