Smart Embroidery: NFC, QR Codes and Textile Circuits with Conductive Thread

Embroidery can do much more than decorate a textile product. By integrating NFC, QR codes and conductive thread, clothing, caps, patches and other textiles can interact with smartphones, digital content and electronic circuits.

These solutions sit within the field of smart textiles and e-textiles. Bordados Custom already produces textile applications with embedded NFC and projects combining QR codes with embroidery and printing, and we are also developing conductive-thread solutions for circuits integrated directly into textiles.

QUICK ANSWER

Yes, technology can be integrated into textile products. A textile item can contain hidden NFC, a functional QR code or even electrical tracks made with conductive thread. These solutions can be used in clothing, caps, uniforms, patches, towels, merchandise and many other textiles, with no minimum quantity and according to the intended function.

1. What are smart embroidery and smart textiles?

Traditional embroidery is mainly visual: it reproduces a logo, name, symbol or illustration in thread.

Smart embroidery adds a function to the textile product. It can allow a smartphone to read information through NFC, open digital content through a QR code or integrate conductive areas that form part of an electrical circuit.

The technology is not limited to patches. It can be integrated into clothing, caps, uniforms, accessories, towels, hospitality textiles, merchandise and many other textile products, as long as the material and construction are suitable for the intended use.

In practice, the textile stops being only a visual support and also becomes part of the product's function.

2. How does NFC integrated into textiles work?

NFC can be incorporated directly into a textile item using a tag designed for clothing and other textile applications. It is applied with heat and pressure, remaining integrated into the product and hidden from normal view.

We use NFC tags designed for textile applications, suitable for washing and intended to remain integrated into the product. Smartphones can read the tag through the textile layers without the component needing to remain visible.

The NFC can be programmed by us or by the customer. It can open practically any link-based destination, such as a website, video, profile, contact page, digital menu, product page, identification information or other online content.

One example we have already produced was for a student group, where the NFC integrated into a patch opened a video related to the group.

Can the NFC destination be changed?

Yes, if the tag remains unlocked. In that case it can be reprogrammed later. It can also be locked after configuration, preventing future changes. When the destination is already final, locking is usually the safer option because it prevents third parties from changing the associated content.

Is the NFC visible?

No. The NFC remains hidden within the textile construction and does not interfere with the normal appearance of the embroidery, garment or accessory.

Can it be washed?

Yes. For textile applications, we use NFC tags designed for clothing and other textile products and intended to withstand use and washing under the conditions appropriate to the finished product.

Where can NFC be used in textiles?

The possibilities go far beyond a simple patch. Some examples include:

  • Restaurants and hospitality: hidden NFC in a tablecloth, napkin, apron or another textile item can open a digital menu, venue information or a review page.
  • Wi-Fi: a textile item can open the network access page or connection instructions.
  • Events: merchandise, staff clothing or patches can open schedules, maps, photos or the official event page.
  • Artist merchandise: clothing, caps or patches can open the artist's website, Spotify, a music video, an album or exclusive content.
  • Student groups and motorcycle clubs: a patch or garment can open a page, video, social media profile, archive of memories or other group content.
  • Industrial maintenance: a cover, cloth or another textile associated with a machine can provide quick access to manuals, technical sheets, instructions or maintenance information.
  • Fashion brands and premium editions: hidden NFC in a limited-edition garment can open a digital certificate of authenticity, serial number, collection information or exclusive content, adding a layer that is harder to replicate in a simple counterfeit.
  • Pets: NFC can be integrated into pet clothing or a textile accessory to open pet information and the owner's contact details in case the animal gets lost.
  • Personalised gifts: an embroidered item, patch or garment can open a message, video, photo album or other personal content.

3. Can QR codes be integrated into embroidery?

Yes. A QR code can be integrated into an embroidered product, but the production method should be selected according to the size, contrast and precision required for fast and reliable scanning.

In one recent project, we produced a patch under 5 cm that included a very small QR code. The code could be reproduced in embroidery, but the texture and shadows created by the thread made smartphone scanning less immediate.

The solution agreed with the customer was to combine techniques: the QR code was printed while the rest of the patch was embroidered. This allowed us to preserve the appearance and durability of embroidery without compromising the function of the code.

The same principle can be applied to barcodes and other machine-readable elements: the priority is to make sure the element works correctly at the intended size and on the intended textile.

4. What is conductive thread embroidery?

Conductive thread allows specific embroidered areas to carry electrical current. Instead of serving only to create colour and texture, the thread can become part of a circuit integrated directly into the textile.

Conductive tracks can remain visible as part of the design or can be covered by other textile layers depending on the intended construction.

One possibility is to create textile buttons or contacts. For example, two conductive areas can remain electrically separate and, when the user touches both with a finger, the body closes the circuit and acts as a switch.

The same principle can be used to develop connections between components, sensors, LEDs, contacts and other electronic functions integrated into fabric.

Custom development: conductive thread is available for development and prototyping projects. Each circuit and application is studied according to the intended function, materials and components involved.

We have different conductive thread options available and can develop the textile integration together with the customer. If the electronics are already defined, we can work from those specifications. If necessary, we can also participate in developing the electronic solution.

5. What can smart textiles be used for?

Combining embroidery, NFC, QR codes and conductive materials makes it possible to develop solutions for businesses, universities, research, startups, designers, events, fashion, industry, groups and personal projects.

Possible applications include NFC-enabled clothing and uniforms, interactive patches, merchandise linked to digital content, textile buttons and contacts, circuits for sensors or LEDs, identification, prototyping and special textile products developed for a specific function.

There is no minimum quantity. We can develop anything from a single unit or prototype to larger production runs, depending on the project.

6. How does a custom smart-textile project work?

These projects usually begin with a specific need or function rather than a fixed catalogue product.

The customer may come to us with the electronics already developed and ask only for the textile integration, or present the initial idea and develop the solution with us from an earlier stage.

Depending on the project, the process may involve feasibility analysis, material selection, integration planning, prototypes, testing and adjustments before final production.

The goal is to find the most suitable solution for the intended function, without limiting the project to a single technique when combining different methods produces a better result.

7. Frequently asked questions about smart embroidery and smart textiles

Can NFC be integrated into clothing?

Yes. NFC can be integrated into clothing and other textile products while remaining hidden and functional through the textile layers.

Can NFC be used in caps, patches or towels?

Yes. The technology can be integrated into different textile products as long as the material and construction are suitable.

Can the NFC link be changed?

Yes, if the tag remains unlocked. It can also be locked after programming to prevent future changes.

Can a QR code be embroidered?

Yes. Depending on size and required readability, the QR code can be embroidered or combined with another technique that preserves scanning performance more effectively.

Can barcodes be integrated?

Yes, provided the dimensions, contrast and resolution are appropriate for the intended scanning system.

What is conductive thread?

It is thread with electrical conductivity that can be used to create tracks, contacts or parts of a circuit directly in a textile.

Can you also help develop the electronics?

Yes. We can work only on the textile integration when the electronics are already developed, or participate in electronic development when needed.

Is there a minimum quantity?

No. We can develop one unit, a prototype or a larger production run depending on the project.

From decorative embroidery to functional textiles

When NFC, QR codes or conductive materials are integrated into a textile product, embroidery stops being only decorative and can become part of the product's function.

It is precisely this combination of embroidery, textile construction and technology that makes it possible to create customised solutions for applications that do not already exist as standard catalogue products.
